50 years Bothof Translations
Bothof Translations is one of the oldest translation agencies in the Netherlands. This year, we are celebrating half a century in the business! From our office on the Keizer Karelplein in the oldest city in the Netherlands, we help businesses in nearly every industry deliver the best international communication.

Started in a basement
Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos both started their very successful businesses in their garages. And our founder, Gerrit Jan Bothof, also decided to establish the first office of his new translation agency in his home on Postweg in Nijmegen. But unlike the previously mentioned entrepreneurs, not in the garage but in the basement. Bothof quickly outgrew its original accommodation, and the family moved to a larger building with a bigger basement for more employees. Soon, the basement was exchanged for a separate office location. The company subsequently moved four times to new locations, but never left Nijmegen. You will currently find us in a building on Keizer Karelplein, from where we have an almost panoramic view over the city. From our desks, we can see the railway station and most of the city centre. And during the International Four Days Marches in Nijmegen, we stand almost shoulder to shoulder with walkers completing the final stage over the Via Gladiola.
Changes in the world of translating
New premises are obviously not the only changes that our company has experienced. Over the past 50 years, the translating world has changed enormously too. And Bothof always led the way. In the early days, surrounded by piles of dictionaries and reference books, translators would type their translations on mechanical typewriters. In 1973, the first electric IBM machines were introduced in our office. In around 1985, the first eye-wateringly expensive word processors were purchased, enabling Bothof Translations to take a great leap forward. But digitalisation and technical developments didn’t stop there. The introduction of the computer and advanced translation software vastly improved efficiency and translation speed. Integration with software, AI and machine learning ensure that the translating world is still continuously developing.
Consistent quality
Much may have changed in 50 years. But one thing has always remained the same. Half a century ago, Bothof Translations distinguished itself by delivering top quality translations and the highest level of service to all its clients. That has never changed. In 2022, Bothof still delivers the best translations from and into every language and in all specialist fields. This year, we are celebrating 50 years in the business and raising a toast to the next 50 years!
